Automating Healthcare Operations at Enterprise Scale with Luminai

Why We're Investing in Luminai

We're thrilled to announce our investment in Luminai's $38m Series B financing alongside their partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the most influential healthcare organizations in the world. Luminai is building an enterprise AI automation platform purpose-built for healthcare. When we first met Kesava Kirupa Dinakaran, Luminai's cofounder and CEO, we immediately understood the massive potential of what he was building. The company is already working with some of the nation’s most complex health organizations, and we are excited to partner with Luminai as they scale AI-driven automation across the administrative workflows that underpin modern healthcare delivery.

The Challenge: Operational Complexity is Holding Back Healthcare

Healthcare organizations are being suffocated by administrative work, which by some estimates consumes up to 25% of total healthcare spending. Staffing shortages, tightening reimbursement, and aging technology stacks are forcing them to absorb more operational load with fewer resources.

Consider referrals, one of the most rote and routine workflows in healthcare delivery: today a significant share of those still arrive by fax. A large health system might receive thousands of faxed documents daily, only a portion of which are actually referrals. This means staff must manually sift through everything to distinguish actual referrals, then once a referral has been identified, manually type in the values back into the primary EMR or other secondary systems. This human-driven process is a systemic bottleneck that directly exacerbates time to treatment for patients in need.

Many organizations have tried to solve these problems with narrowly scoped point solutions, but piecemeal tooling creates new friction rather than eliminating it. We at Define Ventures have long believed that the market needs a platform that can adapt to real operational complexity and expand across workflows over time. In other words, an enterprise-wide system focused on automating and eliminating the myriad manual tasks that plague health system operations today.

Luminai's Solution: An AI-Native Platform for Healthcare Operations

Luminai has built an enterprise automation platform designed for the unique realities of healthcare operations — environments where workflows depend on disorganized unstructured data, require human judgment, and span multiple disconnected departments and systems. Instead of automating a single narrow task, Luminai's platform ingests unstructured inputs, structures them into usable intelligence, and orchestrates full workflows across areas such as patient access, revenue cycle, and compliance.

In conjunction with their fundraise, Luminai is also announcing a strategic collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic — a 6,700-bed system spanning 23 hospitals — to co-develop AI automation across the enterprise, with a goal of rolling out eight to 10 new automation initiatives per year. The Cleveland Clinic is one of the most renowned healthcare institutions in the world, serving as a bastion for clinical leadership and innovation. At Cleveland Clinic, Luminai's platform identifies, triages, and routes incoming referrals from a high volume stream of faxes, accelerating patient access and freeing staff from hours of manual review.

When we first saw Luminai in action, we were immediately impressed with its seamlessness and accuracy; they were already working with both Fortune 500 customers and many healthcare organizations we knew well, all of whom corroborated that Luminai was delivering on its promise. It felt like exactly the solution enterprise healthcare needed and we knew that health systems across the country would be great partners for them. Soon after that, we introduced Kesava to the Cleveland Clinic who quickly moved to establish their partnership with  Luminai, and as Chief Digital Officer Rohit Chandra, PhD, noted: "Luminai brings a practical, collaborative mindset, supported by a team that understands both advanced technology and healthcare operations, which allows us to apply AI in ways that meaningfully support our teams by reducing administrative burden and improving patient satisfaction."

Why Now and Why This Team?

Health systems are increasingly recognizing that one-off automation tools don't compound: they need a flexible, configurable platform that can tackle multiple workflows and scale across the organization. Simultaneously, recent rapid advances in AI and large language models have made it possible to automate processes that previously required significant human intervention. That convergence of demand and technical capability creates a significant opportunity for a team that can deliver an enterprise-grade automation platform inside complex healthcare environments.

Luminai's leadership brings not only that technical depth but also the humility to earn the trust of large, complex healthcare organizations. Kesava has assembled a team around him with deep technical talent and proven healthcare go-to-market expertise, positioning Luminai to build both a differentiated product and scale it across the enterprise.

Define has been both a thoughtful and deeply supportive partner to Luminai. They've truly impacted our trajectory into the health system market, and have accelerated our ability to work with the largest enterprises in the world. Without Define, we wouldn't be working with the types of customers we're working with today–and we're grateful for the opportunity to go deep with them in the decade ahead. - Kesava Kirupa Dinakaran, CEO and and Co-founder of Luminai

We believe Luminai is positioned to become the connective tissue for healthcare operations, bridging infrastructure across the industry to eliminate administrative friction. We are proud to partner with Kesava and the entire Luminai team as they redefine what is possible in healthcare.
